What Made the Difference?
Step 1: Understanding the Individual, Not Just the Condition
The first thing we did was listen. James told us about his bloating, digestive discomfort, low energy, and the constant frustration of trying every diet under the sun without results.
He’d been told that weight loss would be slow and difficult because of his thyroid, and he felt trapped by the unpredictability of his IBS flare-ups.
We assured him that yes – these things can make fat loss more complex, but not impossible. The key? Personalisation.

Step 2: IBS-Friendly Nutrition (That Still Supported Fat Loss)
IBS doesn’t look the same for everyone, so we started with a food diary to identify James’ trigger foods. For him, it turned out that onions, garlic, beans, and certain fruits caused bloating and discomfort.
So we built his nutrition plan around low-FODMAP principles – focusing on gut-friendly carbs and easy-to-digest protein sources. But we also:
- Â Kept his protein intake high to preserve muscle mass.
- Â Created a calorie deficit that was sustainable, not extreme.
- Â Focused on whole foods, minimizing ultra-processed choices.
- Â Timed his meals to reduce bloating before training sessions.
The result? He felt more energised and in control of his digestion within the first two weeks – and the fat started to drop off consistently.

Step 3: Supporting a Sluggish Thyroid
James’ under-active thyroid did mean his metabolism wasn’t as fast as someone else’s – but that just meant we needed to be even more strategic.
- Â We introduced resistance training 3x per week, which helped increase his metabolic rate and preserve lean muscle.
- Â His step count was slowly increased over time, aiming for a daily average of 10,000.
-  Sleep and stress were addressed too – two things that can really mess with thyroid function and fat loss.
We also encouraged James to check in with his GP to ensure his medication was optimally dosed. Our job isn’t to replace medical advice – but to work alongside it and make sure his training and nutrition were complementing his treatment.

Step 4: Consistency, Not Perfection
What impressed me most about James was his consistency. He didn’t chase perfection – he focused on getting the basics right, every single day. Even when IBS symptoms flared or energy was low, he showed up. He adjusted, asked questions, and stayed coachable.
We used weekly check-ins to make small tweaks, troubleshoot flare-ups, and keep motivation high. He also had daily access to me via WhatsApp, so he never felt like he was doing it alone.
